Sage: HR vs People vs HCM vs HRMS: An objective comparison
Sage’s people software spans four names that often get lumped together in search: Sage HR, Sage People, Sage HCM, and Sage HRMS. The simplest way to separate them is by audience and product generation: Sage HR is the small-business HR app, Sage People is the global mid-market HCM platform, Sage HCM is the rebranded Criterion HCM line, and Sage HRMS is Sage’s older HR and payroll suite for the North American market.
A note for UK buyers: Only Sage HR and Sage People are currently available to UK businesses. Sage HCM (launched April 2026) and Sage HRMS are both North American products (US and Canada only) and should not be shortlisted by UK organisations at this time.

Sage HR
Sage HR (formerly Cake HR) is a mobile-ready HR platform for companies with up to 250 employees, with core functions such as onboarding, employee records, leave management, performance, timesheets, shift scheduling, expenses, and recruitment available through modules.
It is the best match for businesses that want quick adoption, cleaner self-service, and less admin without committing to a broader HCM solution.
Sage HR integrates with Sage Business Cloud Payroll in the UK, giving small businesses a connected HR and payroll workflow without switching platforms. This makes it a natural companion to Sage's accounting and payroll products already widely used by UK SMEs.
Sage People
Sage People is an all-in-one HCM and payroll solution for mid-sized global or multi-location organisations, with a fit for service and knowledge-based industries and a user base in the 250 to 5,000 employee range. It is built on Salesforce, which matters for those that want a secure, scalable cloud environment and stronger support for distributed teams.

It’s one of the most established HCM platforms in the UK market. Sage itself is a FTSE-listed company headquartered in Newcastle, and the UK accounts for a significant share of Sage People's global customer base.
For UK buyers, Sage People Payroll is a native, HMRC-recognised payroll solution covering:
- Real Time Information (RTI) submissions directly to HMRC.
- Pensions auto-enrolment with secure integration to pension providers.
- Automatic NI category letter changes and P45/P60 publishing.
- Gender pay gap reporting (a statutory requirement for UK employers with 250 or more employees).

UK and Ireland-based customers can run payroll natively within Sage People or connect an existing payroll provider.
Sage HCM
Sage HCM is a modular cloud platform covering HR administration, payroll, talent management, time and attendance, performance, and compliance, with strong configurability. It’s built on the technology from Criterion HCM, which Sage acquired on 6 October 2025, and was formally launched as Sage HCM in April 2026.

Where Sage HRMS fits
